The MTV Effect
The songs music video is well remembered as the first music video shown on MTV in the United States on 1st August 1981. It was a glimpse into the future of ever changing music. It was also the first video shown on MTV classic in the UK in March 2010. The song was written in the late seventies at the time when music videos were all the rage and a lament for the golden age of radio, where families gathered around the radio to listen to the music at the time. An older singer who was struggling to continue to be popular and highlighting the fact that visuals were now becoming as important as the song itself. It was no longer good enough to be a good musician, you also had to look good or different to make it. The theme of the song is highlighted by the use of the filter on the vocalist as a hint back to the radio generation. The new sound devotees bought an unprecedented number of synthesizers in place of guitars.
